Ric Renner Texas High School Hysteria Jan 30, 2024 It’s remarkable what Gilmer’s Alan Metzel has done in 4 short years as Head Football Coach. He’s won 21 of 24 playoff games with 3 trips to Jerry World. The Buckeyes win their 4th State Title in 9 appearances and Metzel’s first as a Head Coach. Alan is the nicest guy you will ever meet and hails from the Jeff Traylor coaching tree that’s turning into 5 trees!  The Gilmer stadium is named after Metzel’s good buddy and the two combined for 3 State Championships together building Gilmer into a State & National power! UTSA’s Traylor left the perennial power in good hands with his assistants Matt Turner and Metzel. Eventually Metzel would get his shot as Head Coach after 17 years of being an assistant in the storied program.   T wo teams that bring in very powerful offenses -   Gilmer and Bellville   - collide in the middle game  of the Texas high school football state championship Friday slate at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. The matchup is a part of UIL state championship week at AT&T Stadium with 12 games being played from Wednesday to Saturday with three games per day. Dec 11, 2023 (14-1) Wimberley Junior Quarterback Cody Stoever played an amazing game, but his game tying two point conversion was stopped shy of the goal line as (15-0) Bellville thwarted an amazing comeback to reach the UIL 4A Division II state football championship. Bellville was led by Junior Running Back DD Murray, who had several amazing touchdown runs. Bellville had leads of 7-0, 14-7, 28-14, before holding on for the dramatic 35-33 victory. Bellville will play Gilmer, who defeated Glen Rose, this Friday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Bellville Defensive End DJ Sanders got the scoring started with a scoop and score 27-yard fumble recovery to give the Brahmas a 7-0 lead. Stoever tied it with a 5-yard TD run 7-7. Sam Hranicky made it 14-7 with a short TD run for Bellville, but Stoever tied it up again with a short yardage TD run 14-all with 10:33 to play in the 2nd quarter.
