Eventual champion Graham edges Gilmer, 26-20, in quarterfinals of Texas State 7 on 7 Championships Division II

Making a return to Division II of the Texas State 7on7 Championships after a year’s absence, the Gilmer Buckeyes made some noise early in Leander last Thursday, winning all three of their games in Pool Play and making it into the Championship Bracket that began last Friday morning at 9 a.m.

The Gilmer Buckeyes won their first two games in the championship bracket Friday, 34-12 over White Oak, and 33-27 over Houston Westbury Christian, before falling to the Graham Steers, 26-20, in a game that concluded at about 12:20 p.m.

Graham then defeated Somerset, 45-20, and Argyle, 33-31, to become the State 7 on 7 Division II champion in a game that concluded around 4:30 p.m. Friday at Southwest Williamson County Regional Park.

By JOE BLOUNT Long before the birth of Christ the buckeye was known to have medicinal value. The nutlike seed, found abundantly on shrubs here in East Texas, first got its notoriety as a curative agent from the Greco-Roman culture. Their god of medicine was Aesculapian. Even today botanical scientists place the buckeye within the genus Aesculus, recognize it as a member of the horse-chestnut family and are still highly puzzled by its many and varied phytochemicals. “Phyto,” as you may recall from biology, simply means “from plants.” There are a great number of antioxidants and maintenance chemicals found in the buckeye’s pulp. Student tickets are available until noon on Friday for $5. Tickets will be sold at the gate (cash only) for $8. No student tickets will be sold at gate. Orange cards will be honored!
