Congratulations to Curtis Brown, first Buckeye ever selected to play in Army All-American Bowl

Gilmer's Brown picked for Army All-American Bowl

By JOE DODD
Gilmer Buckeyes’ senior Curtis Brown has been selected to play in the 2007 Army All-American Bowl scheduled for Jan. 6, 2007, at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The game will be broadcast live by NBC.
Brown received his West Team jersey from Army representatives at a presentation before the Buckeyes’ game against White Oak.
Brown is one of only 78 players from across the nation selected to play in the game. Brown, along with teammates G.J. Kinne and Dominique Buchanan were among 400 players nominated to participate in the event.
The 6-foot, 175-pounder has verbally committed to the University of Texas to play football for the Longhorns next season. Brown started at cornerback on the Buckeyes’ 2004 state championship team, totaling 42 tackles, five interceptions and nine passes broken up, before moving to receiver his junior year. Last season, Brown was named District 13-3A Offensive MVP after racking up 1,724 yards and 18 touchdowns for the season on 63 receptions and 47 carries.
So far this season, Brown has totaled 680 yards and 12 touchdowns in only five games. Brown injured an ankle early in the Atlanta game, and has not played since. He is expected to be back in the Buckeyes’ lineup before the end of regular season play.
Brown joins an impressive list of game alumni that includes Adrian Peterson, Reggie Bush and Ted Ginn Jr.
“I would have never thought this could happen to me, but I’m glad that it did,” Brown said. “I’m representing Gilmer now. I’m the first one to get this honor, so I’ve got to represent my school right.”
“It couldn’t have happened to a more deserving kid. He’s for sure one of the greatest football players I’ve ever coached. He’ll get to show his stuff on national TV now, so that will be exciting for Curtis, and for our program, and for Gilmer,” said Gilmer Buckeyes’ head coach Jeff Traylor.
According to the game’s website, the U.S. Army All-American Bowl is a celebration of high school football. During Bowl week the U.S. Army puts on a Cheer Bowl, a national coaches convention featuring an on-field coaching clinic and seminars with some of the NFL’s greatest coaches, and the only National Combine featuring high school football’s top underclassmen. The public is encouraged to participate in the events throughout the week including a Pep Rally and Fan Fiesta along with the game day activities.

How Gilmer came to be known as the Buckeyes

By JOE BLOUNT Long before the birth of Christ the buckeye was known to have medicinal value. The nutlike seed, found abundantly on shrubs here in East Texas, first got its notoriety as a curative agent from the Greco-Roman culture. Their god of medicine was Aesculapian. Even today botanical scientists place the buckeye within the genus Aesculus, recognize it as a member of the horse-chestnut family and are still highly puzzled by its many and varied phytochemicals. “Phyto,” as you may recall from biology, simply means “from plants.” There are a great number of antioxidants and maintenance chemicals found in the buckeye’s pulp. There are also many toxic compounds and several of the substances are downright poisonous. Early Greek docs would skin the buckeye and boil the endosperm, producing a brew that was taken internally. Most often, just as the case may still be today, the cure inevitably turned out to be worse than the disease. So now, we see that the buckeye is poisonous. We also b...
