GILMER - Friday the 13th turned into a night of Cardinal sins for the winless Sabine Cardinals at the unvanquished Gilmer Buckeyes' happy homecoming Friday night.
Gilmer quarterback G.J. Kinne flicked four touchdown tosses onto the Cardinals as No. 2 Gilmer beat Sabine, 49-7, in the teams' District 15-3A opener.
No. 2 Gilmer (6-0, 1-0), which hasn't lost at home since 2002, tucked this one in the treasure chest early, streaking to leads of 28-0 at first quarter's end, and 35-7 at halftime.
Kinne continued his series of weekly rampages with three TD tosses in the first quarter alone, two of them to Lamar Harris. The field general, a transfer from Canton, finished the evening 9-of-17 for 158 yards.
Gilmer running back Justin Johnson, meanwhile, hoofed for two TDs, gathering 89 yards on only nine carries.
The Buckeyes scored on their first possession, having to journey only 29 yards in four plays after a 21-yard Sabine punt. Kinne rifled a 20-yard scoring sling to Harris with 8:41 left in the opening period, and Matt Burgin banged the first of seven PAT kicks.
Kinne then sent a 10-yard TD throw to Harris with 4:20 left in the first period.
The earth began seemingly swallowing the Cardinals (0-6, 0-1) as they fumbled away the ensuing kickoff at their 6-yard line. On the next play, Johnson bopped into Beulah land with 4:09 left in the first.
And the Buckeyes added yet another opening-period tally when Kinne lofted the ball to Jamell Kennedy, who made a stupefying run down the left sideline for a 55-yard TD connection. That came with 1:32 to go in the period.
Josh Thompson trod a yard for Gilmer's next TD with 3:21 left to halftime. Sabine then briefly rebounded on QB Josh Herod's 37-yard TD throw to Desmond Perry with 43 seconds left to the break.
Taylor Grey kicked the PAT, but missed a 34-yard field goal at the half's end.
