Backup quarterback Brett Rice led the Gilmer Buckeyes to a 23-0 victory over the Tatum Eagles at Jeff Traylor Stadium here Friday night. Demarco Boyd scored two touchdowns for the Buckeyes and Red Jones had the other one. Juan Esquivel added a 21-yard field goal for the final three points. Zac Spears, who started the first two games at QB for Gilmer, reportedly underwent emergency appendectomy surgery Wednesday night. He has reportedly received medical clearance to return to practice on Monday.
The Buckeyes won their 19th game in a row and their 22nd straight home game. It was the first shutout for the Black Flag Defense since a 70-0 win over Canton here on Oct. 17, 2014.Next, Gilmer (3-0) hosts the Daingerfield Tigers on Friday, Sept. 18.

In the much-anticipated season-opening matchup between Liberty-Eylau and Gilmer, the preseason Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the ETSN.fm East Texas Class 4A poll, it was the Buckeyes who came out on top.
