Buckeyes dominate all-district selections

By JOE DODD
Thirty-seven players and the Gilmer Buckeyes’ coaching staff were honored recently when the District 15-3A Football Team was announced. The Buckeyes finished the season with a 10-1 record, and the Associated Press’ No. 1 ranking in Class 3A.
“We’re extremely proud to have that many kids make it. I take great pride in that,” said Gilmer head coach Jeff Traylor. “Whenever you work hard, you get rewarded; and that’s a good thing.”
Buckeyes’ quarterback G.J. Kinne was named the district’s Most Valuable Player after passing for 3,261 yards and 47 touchdowns, while completing 68 percent of his passes. Kinne also ran for an additional 9 touchdowns, and suffered only one interception on the season. That one interception came on Kinne’s first pass as a Buckeye.
Jamell Kennedy was chosen as the district’s Offensive MVP, after totaling 906 total offensive yards and 9 touchdowns on 30 catches and 26 rushes. Kennedy moved to receiver for his senior season after being named first team all-district in 2005 as the Buckeyes’ quarterback.
“It’s amazing how it turned out for Jamell,” stated Traylor. “He was quarterback last year, and he didn’t get the Offensive MVP; now he moves to wide receiver and he is the Offensive MVP.”
Both Kinne and Kennedy have committed to Texas universities to continue their education and football careers. Kinne plans on playing quarterback at Baylor, while Kennedy will line up at receiver for SMU.
Buckeyes’ linebacker Arsenial Richardson was selected as the district’s Defensive MVP for leading the Black Flag Defense with 113 tackles during the regular season. Gilmer’s defense only allowed 54 points in 5 district games.
Gilmer freshman safety Stump Godfrey and sophomore cornerback Kezie Camp were voted as the district’s Co-Defensive Newcomer of the year. Camp led the Buckeyes with 4 interceptions, while the defense held opponents to an average of only 103 passing yards per game.
Last season’s Offensive MVP Curtis Brown, headlines the 15-AAA All-District First Team. Brown, who played in only one full district game, missed most of 5 games for the Buckeyes, but still managed to accumulate 1,138 yards and 15 touchdowns on only 56 offensive touches. Brown is listed as the top recruit in the state of Texas and has committed to play football for the Texas Longhorns, starting next season.
14 other Buckeyes were named to the First Team with Brown. Junior running back Justin Johnson and junior receiver Lamar Harris, along with junior linemen David Snow, Cody Lee, Chip Elms, and Garrett Adkins were all First Team Offense selections.
Senior linebackers Wes Wynne and Dominique Buchanan join senior linemen Dakota Bickerdike and Donte Harris on the defensive first team, along with senior safety Jules Johnson. Junior cornerback Dustin Jones was the only Buckeyes’ underclassman chosen for the first team defense.
Jones was also named as the first team’s punt returner, along with kicker Matt Burgin. The Buckeyes’ coaching staff was named the Coaching Staff of the Year.
Traylor summed up the honor this way: “Whenever you have a team, and 36 of them make All-District; it’s a tremendous compliment to the program, and to our kids and their parents.”

How Gilmer came to be known as the Buckeyes

By JOE BLOUNT Long before the birth of Christ the buckeye was known to have medicinal value. The nutlike seed, found abundantly on shrubs here in East Texas, first got its notoriety as a curative agent from the Greco-Roman culture. Their god of medicine was Aesculapian. Even today botanical scientists place the buckeye within the genus Aesculus, recognize it as a member of the horse-chestnut family and are still highly puzzled by its many and varied phytochemicals. “Phyto,” as you may recall from biology, simply means “from plants.” There are a great number of antioxidants and maintenance chemicals found in the buckeye’s pulp. There are also many toxic compounds and several of the substances are downright poisonous. Early Greek docs would skin the buckeye and boil the endosperm, producing a brew that was taken internally. Most often, just as the case may still be today, the cure inevitably turned out to be worse than the disease. So now, we see that the buckeye is poisonous. We also b

Gilmer Buckeyes to play for the state championship tonight

By JOE DODD The top ranked and undefeated Gilmer Buckeyes will try to win the school’s second state championship when they face the Abilene Wylie Bulldogs today at Gerald J. Ford Stadium on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. The matchup between the Buckeyes and the Bulldogs in the final state title game this decade is a fitting tribute to the two most dominant teams in class 3A since 2000. Gilmer has won more games this decade than any other class 3A team, going 111-17 since 2000. Abilene Wylie is close behind with a 106-26 record. The Buckeyes and Bulldogs will be playing in their third state final in the last 10 years. Both teams won a state title in 2004. Gilmer and Abilene Wylie have combined for nine semifinal appearances this decade, including the 2007 Class 3A Division I semifinal that pitted the two teams against each other for the first time. That game wasn’t decided until the Buckeyes’ Lamar Harris scored on a 34-yard pass
