Kenny Pettway's Football Camp

KENNY PETTWAY’S FOOTBALL CAMP gets started again for its second time around Friday morning at Buckeye Stadium with a group photo of participants. Pettway, 25, a fourth-year NFL linebacker with the Jacksonville Jaguars, is introducing (inset photo) a few of his Gilmer Buckeyes teammates from 1997-99, such as QBs Olan Johnson and Bran Webb, as the camp begins. Later on the young gridiron hopefuls heard from other NFL players such as his Jaguars teammate and former Hallsville Bobcat Clint Ingram, also Jaguar Richard Collier, Texans defensive end Earl Cochran and Green Bay Packers lineman Alfred Malone. The camp was free, thanks to a grant from the NFL. In an interview with KLTV Channel 7’s Reid Kerr, Pettway said, “This is the greatest highlight of my career. Playing football is fun, but being able to put on a free camp, something I never had when I was little, it’s a big thing for me.”

How Gilmer came to be known as the Buckeyes

The nutlike seed, found abundantly on shrubs here in East Texas, first got its notoriety as a curative agent from the Greco-Roman culture. Their god of medicine was Aesculapian. Even today botanical scientists place the buckeye within the genus Aesculus, recognize it as a member of the horse-chestnut family and are still highly puzzled by its many and varied phytochemicals. “Phyto,” as you may recall from biology, simply means “from plants.” There are a great number of antioxidants and maintenance chemicals found in the buckeye’s pulp. There are also many toxic compounds and several of the substances are downright poisonous. Early Greek docs would skin the buckeye and boil the endosperm, producing a brew that was taken internally. Student tickets are available until noon on Friday for $5. Tickets will be sold at the gate (cash only) for $8. No student tickets will be sold at gate. Orange cards will be honored!
