Mascot: Rabbits
Colors: Maroon/White
District: 15-3A
Enrollment: 509
2009 Record: 3-7, 1-4 district
Last meeting: 2007, Gilmer won 42-14
Series Record: Atlanta leads 26-14
Head Coach: Ronnie Melton (3rd year, 5-15, 8-22 overall)
Returning Starters: 7 Offense/6 Defense
Did you know? Atlanta knocked the 2003 Buckeyes out of the playoffs, 34-14, on this same field in the Class 3A Division II quarterfinals and went on to win state there two weeks later against Marlin, 34-0.
Coach Traylor says: “Just a typical Atlanta team — big, fast, strong; a bunch of people playing both ways.”

September 3- Tatum
Mascot: Eagles
Colors: Kelly Green/White
District: 13-3A
Enrollment: 421
2009 Record: 6-5, 4-1 district, Bi-district Finalist
Last meeting: 2009, Gilmer won 39-20
Series Record: Gilmer leads 14-6
Head Coach: Andy Evans (7th season, 63-18, 134-47 overall)
Returning Starters: 5 Offense/7 Defense
Did you know? Tatum won back-to-back state titles in 2005 and 2006, the first in Class 3A Division II and the second in Class 2A Division I.
Coach Traylor says: “They’re much better than last year. The quarterback is special. The two running backs are special. They moved last year’s quarterback to receiver and he’s special. There’s four of those kids that can score at any time. That’s always scary.”

September 10- Jacksonville
Mascot: Indians
Colors: Royal Blue/Gold
District: 14-4A
Enrollment: 1128
2009 Record: 7-4, Bi-district Finalist
Last meeting: 1957, Gilmer won 40-0.
Series Record: Gilmer leads 6-1
Head Coach: Steve Wells (3rd season, 10-12, 49-49 overall)
Returning Starters: 6 Offense/5 Defense
Did you know? Coach Jeff Traylor spent six years on the Jacksonville coaching staff before returning to Gilmer in 2000.
Coach Traylor says: “I coached (Jacksonville senior QB) Ryan Black in camps and he’s good. It’s such a big school with so much talent. That’s gonna be a really good game to find out how good we really are.”

September 17- Liberty-Eylau
Mascot: Leopards
Colors: Crimson/Black/White
District: 15-3A
Enrollment: 719
2009 Record: 6-5, Area Finalist
Last meeting: 2009, Gilmer won 35-17
Series Record: Liberty-Eylau leads 11-5
Head Coach: Pat Brady (7th season, 45-27, 45-27 overall)
Returning Starters: 5 Offense/5 Defense
Did you know? Liberty-Eylau won Class 3A Division I state championships in 1999 and 2006.
Coach Traylor says: “They’ve got a great tailback. Very good on defense. Very athletic. Just a typical Liberty-Eylau team.”

September 24- @ Daingerfield
Mascot: Tigers
Colors: Blue/White
District: 17-2A
Enrollment: 407
2009 Record: 15-1, Class 2A Div. II State Champion
Last meeting: 2009, Gilmer won 43-20
Series Record: Daingerfield leads 30-24
Head Coach: Barry Bowman (3rd season, 30-2, 44-18 overall)
Returning Starters: 5 Offense/2 Defense
Did you know? Daingerfield has won state two years in a row, but both of those years lost to Gilmer for the only blemish on its record each year.
Coach Traylor says: “As talented a group as I’ve ever seen in 2A. They’re unbelievable. We played ‘em in 7-on-7. You gotta play ‘em there, too. I’m sure they’re tired of hearing how Gilmer always beats them, so I would imagine that’s going to be a tough one.”

October 8- Gladewater
Mascot: Bears
Colors: Orange/Black
District: 16-3A
Enrollment: 549
2009 Record: 3-8, 3-2 district, Bi-district Finalist
Last meeting: 2009, Gilmer won 67-12
Series Record: Gilmer leads 27-25-2
Head Coach: Jerrod Baugh (1st season)
Returning Starters: 7 Offense/7 Defense
Did you know? The last time Gladewater won seven games in a season was in 2002.
Coach Traylor says: “Much better, because their sprint relay is back (state qualifiers in track). They’ve got the Davis twins (Corey and Cortney) who can just flat out go. And that coaching staff will have them fired up. Those Longview guys will have them ready to go. I expect it to be more of a Gilmer-Gladewater rivalry game than it has been in the past.”

October 15- @ Carthage
Mascot: Bulldogs
Colors: Red/White
District: 17-3A
Enrollment: 731
2009 Record: 16-0, 5-0 district, Div. II State Champion
Last meeting: 2008, Carthage won 31-28
Series Record: Carthage leads 4-3
Head Coach: Scott Surratt (4th season, 55-5, 55-5 overall)
Returning Starters: 4 Offense/4 Defense
Did you know? Gilmer geared much of its season in 2009 around avenging the 2008 quarterfinal loss to Carthage only to have expected Div. I qualifier Chapel Hill not win its final regular season game by enough points to make the playoffs. Thus, Carthage and Gilmer went into different divisions and both wound up winning state in undefeated fashion.
Coach Traylor says: “Quarterback makes ‘em go — (Anthony) Morgan. Two great receivers. Got a great linebacker, a great safety. Very well-coached team. I think Scott does as good a job as anybody does.”

October 22- Spring Hill
Mascot: Panthers
Colors: Blue/Silver/White
District: 16-3A
Enrollment: 524
2009 Record: 3-6, 2-3 district
Last meeting: 2009, Gilmer won 66-14
Series Record: Gilmer leads 12-2
Head Coach: Bill Poe (1st season)
Returning Starters: 7 Offense/7 Defense
Did you know? The Buckeyes’ 684 total yards against the Panthers in 2006 is the most in team history.
Coach Traylor says: “Coach Poe has done a good job. They’re in the spread now. Quarterback makes ‘em go, Dylan Brown. They’ve got two good receivers. Their lines are good. They’ll be a lot better. They’ll be much improved.”

October 29- @ Henderson
Mascot: Lions
Colors: Blue/Red
District: 16-3A
Enrollment: 879.5
2009 Record: 5-5, 2-3 district
Last meeting: 1997, Henderson won 48-0
Series Record: Gilmer leads 5-2-1
Head Coach: Dickey Meeks (5th season, 11-29, 203-162-7 overall)
Returning Starters: 5 Offense/8 Defense
Did you know? Gilmer beat Henderson there, 101-0, in 1928.
Coach Traylor says: “Of the coaches I talk to, that’s the team that has the most talent, from what I understand. That’s the most physically gifted team. You know, that’s just another 4A school dropping down. That’s usually trouble when they first drop down. You gotta go there as well. So that’s another bad draw for us.”

November 5- Pittsburg
Mascot: Eagles
Colors: Black/Vegas Gold
District: 16-3A
Enrollment: 645
2009 Record: 12-2, 5-0 district, Div. II Semifinalist
Last meeting: 2005, Gilmer won 55-6
Series Record: Gilmer leads 40-21-3
Head Coach: Robert Manley (4th season, 27-11, 92-56 overall)
Returning Starters: 5 Offense/6 Defense
Did you know? Pittsburg nearly upset Gilmer during the latter’s 16-0 run to the Class 3A Division II state championship in 2004. A last-minute TD pass from Manuel Johnson to Tay Bowser averted it and Gilmer won, 22-18.
Coach Traylor says: “They’ve got the big quarterback (Mitch Manley) coming back, the coach’s son. Coach Manley does a great job. His son’s a good player. It just caps off an unbelievable schedule there.”

With only 16 teams left in the Class 3A Division I playoffs, the Gilmer Buckeyes are just one of many teams with impressive résumés.

“They’re all good this time of the year,” stated Gilmer head coach Jeff Traylor, who has led his alma mater to a 108-17 record and one state championship in his 10 years at the helm of the Buckeyes.

Take La Vega, the Buckeyes’ opponent Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Mesquite. The Pirates have gone at least three rounds deep in the playoffs every year since 2006, sporting an impressive 10-3 playoff record in that span.

“We do have some experience and tradition,” admitted La Vega head coach Willie Williams, who has a 135-84-2 record in his 20th season as Pirates’ head coach.

Like Traylor, Williams is coaching in his hometown. “This is the only place I’ve known. I graduated from here and I’ve coached here for 27 years. I’ve never coache…
